چکیده
3 This paper investigates the performance of a novel semi-active damping device at mitigating non4 simultaneous multi-hazard loads. The device, termed modified friction device (MFD), has been previously 5 proposed by the authors. It consists of a variable friction system based on automotive drum brake technol6 ogy. The device has been demonstrated in a laboratory environment, and its dynamic behavior modeled. 7 This model is used to conduct numerical simulations on two representative structures, one short building 8 located in Japan and the other tall building located in Boston, MA. Simulated hazards include wind, blast, 9 and seismic loads. Various control cases are considered, including semi-active control under five different 10 sets of control weights, as well as passive viscous and passive friction to benchmark performance. Results 11 show that the semi-active control cases outperforms all of the other cases for the vast majority of hazards 12 and performance indices, provided that the right control weights are utilized. 13

Performance evaluation of a semi-active cladding connection for multi-hazard mitigation
A novel semi-active damping device termed Variable Friction Cladding Connection (VFCC) has been previously proposed to leverage cladding systems for the mitigation of natural and man-made hazards. The VFCC is a semi-active friction damper that connects cladding elements to the structural system. The friction force is generated by sliding plates and varied using an actuator through a system of a...

This paper proposes a re-centering variable friction device (RVFD) for control of civil structures subjected to near-field earthquakes. The proposed hybrid device has two subcomponents. The first subcomponent of this hybrid device consists of shape memory alloy (SMA) wires that exhibit a unique hysteretic behavior and full recovery following post-transformation deformations. The second subcompo...

Supplemental damping can be used as a cost-effective method to reduce structural vibrations. In particular, passive systems are now widely accepted and have numerous applications in the field. However, they are typically tuned to specific excitations and their performances are bandwidth-limited. A solution is to use semi-active devices, which have shown to be capable of substantially enhanced m...
متن کاملThe Use of Monte-Carlo Simulations in Seismic Hazard Analysis in Tehran and Surrounding Areas
Probabilistic seismic hazard analysis is a technique for estimating the annual rate of exceedance of a specified ground motion at a site due to the known and suspected earthquake sources. A Monte-Carlo approach is utilized to estimate the seismic hazard at a site. This method uses numerous resampling of an earthquake catalog to construct synthetic catalogs to evaluate the ground motion hazard a...
